Period 5 Vocabulary and Speaking; Writing 整体设计教材分析 本节课学生练习会话和写作, 描述同一个城市的正反两个方面, 对比两个城市的相同和不同之处。写作部分学生学习写一篇作文比较两个城市的相同与不同之处, 着重要考虑的是比较的项目内容。 三维目标 1. 知识与技能 1)Train students’ speaking. 2)Make students learn to write a paragraph describing two cities. 2. 过程与方法 1)Make students learn how to use some simple everyday English in a conversation. 2)Through the analysis of the steps in writing a short paragraph comparing two cities, students may learn some strategies in writing comparisons. 3. 情感与价值 Through the study of this period not only will students know how to make suggestions but they will also learn some wring skills by following the steps given. 教学重点 Learn to write a description comparing two places. 教学难点 Have students form the habit of collecting materials before writing something. 教学方法 Practice & group work 教学过程 → Step 1 Revision Check their workbook exercises. → Step 2 Vocabulary and Speaking 1. Suggested answers: Positive features: attractive, lively, modern, peaceful, smart, wealthy Option Two 1)Read through the words and have students repeat them after you. Pay attention to those words which don’t have the stress on the first syllable: attractive, industrial, polluted. 2)Ask students to discuss the meanings in pairs and then come up with a list of the positive features. Then call back their answers in a whole class setting and make a list on the blackboard. 2. Activity Two 1)Divide the whole class into five groups according to their choice. They are then required to describe the city they have chosen. Their description should cover as many words in Activity One as they can. 2)A representative from each group reports in a whole class setting. Sample descriptions: New York is a modern and wealthy industrial city, and it is busy and crowded although not very dirty. Beijing is the economic and political centre of our country. It is an attractive city with a lot of beautiful buildings. My hometown is on the bank of the Yellow River. It is very poor now, but I make up my mind to work hard to make it wealthy and attractive. 3. Activity Three 1)Offer three pairs of cities for students to choose from and then divide them into four groups according to their choices. The three pairs of cities can be as follows: Beijing & Shanghai; London & Barcelona; Florence & New York. You may ask them to discuss the following aspects of the cities: population, industry, climate, location, transport, tourism in groups and then try to fill in the form. (Show the following on the screen. ) Taking Shanghai & Beijing as an example Aspects Shanghai and Beijing  Population Shanghai has a larger population than Beijing and is much more crowded.  Industry Beijing has more industry and is more polluted than Shanghai.  Climate Shanghai has more rain than Beijing.  Location Beijing is in the north of China, while Shanghai is in the south.  Transport The traffic is busier in Beijing than in Shanghai.  Tourism There are fewer tourists in Shanghai than in Beijing.   2)Then you may wish to ask a representative from each group to say something about their choice. → Step 3 Writing 1. Read through the following steps with students and make sure they understand what they have to do. (Show the following steps on the screen. ) 1. Think of two regions, cities, towns or villages you know well. One of them could be your hometown. 2. Write notes about some of these features: population, climate, industry, location, tourism, transport. 3. Write sentences using your notes. E. g. Harbin is a cold, industrial centre in the north. It has over three million inhabitants. Guangzhou is a hot, industrial port in the south. It has over four million inhabitants. 4. Rewrite the sentences and compare the two places. Use the link words in Grammar, and the ways of making comparisons in Function. 5. Organize your sentences into paragraphs. Each paragraph should discuss one particular feature. You may need to rewrite some of your sentences. 6. Write a sentence to start your description about the two places saying what you know about them or what’s special about them. 7. Write a sentence to finish your description and give your opinion about the two places. Harbin and Guangzhou are very different cities, but I like them both very much. 2. Give students 15 minutes and have them finish the composition individually. 3. When they have finished, ask them to exchange their writing with a partner for peer-checking of all aspects of the writing: structure, language, content. . . 4. If you wish to have some students read their writing out to the class, or put up the writing on the walls and ask students to circulate and read other students’ writing. → Step 4 Summary and Homework In this period we first learned some new words in describing places and then you practiced using the words to describe places. Finally we did some writing. Through the writing section students would surely know how to compare two cities.
