I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” I looked at my shabby slipcovers. The girl put her cup back in its saucer (茶托) carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you.” They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job — these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 41. From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on ____________. A. how much money you have had B. how you feel about your life C. how you have helped others D. what job your husband is doing 44. The writer left the muddy prints of small sandals on the floor for a while to ____________. A. show her husband that someone had come B. remind her that she had helped two children C. remind her that she was very rich in the neighborhood D. remind her how life should be B “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.” —— Charles C. Noble It’s such a simple concept, yet it’s something we don’t always do. It’s not extremely difficult to do, and yet I think it’s something that would make a world of difference in anyone’s life. Break your goals into habits, and focus on putting those habits into autopilot. My belief is that having one goal to focus on is much more powerful than having many goals. I try to turn my goals into habits, and in doing so, I put my goals on autopilot. Turning a goal into a habit means really focusing on it, seriously, for at least a month, to the exclusion of all else. The more you can focus on it, the more it’ll be put on autopilot. Let’s look at my marathon goal as an example. I was just starting out in running, and I had the brilliant idea to run a marathon within a year. But in order to achieve that goal, I broke it down into two habits: 1. I had to make running a daily habit. 2. I had to report to people in order to have accountability (责任) — I did this through family, friends and coworkers, through a blog, and through a column in my local newspaper every two weeks. With this accountability, there’s no way I would stop running. The accountability habit took a couple months, mainly because I didn’t focus on it too much while I was building the running habit. But it stuck, and for that first year of running, I would report to people I knew and blog about my running every day and I would write a column every two weeks for my local paper. Once those two habits were firmly fixed, my marathon goal was pretty much on autopilot. I still had to do the work, of course, but it didn’t require constant focus. And eventually, I ran the marathon. I was able to achieve this because, all year long, I had the daily running habit and daily accountability habit. I put my marathon goal into autopilot, and that made it much easier — instead of struggling with it daily for an entire year, I focused on it for one month and was able to accomplish it while focusing on new habits and goals. 45. According to the passage, we can see the key to forming a habit is ______. A. to break the goals into habits B. to report to other people about your plan C. to set a reasonable goal first D. to focus on the habit as much as possible 46. The author told people about his running in order to ______. A. get more support B. ask for their opinions C. carry out his plan better D. earn more admiration 47. What do we know about the author? A. He was a local athlete. B. He often gave people advice. C. He had no blogs before. D. He wrote for a local newspaper. 48. The passage is mainly about ______. A. goals and habits B. how to turn your goals into habits C. habits and achievements D. how to make running a good habit C Mosquitoes are very small insects. There are more than two thousand different kinds of mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes bite people to drink their blood. Male mosquitoes drink fluids from plants, instead. The female mosquito uses its long thin sucking tube (吸管) to break the skin and find blood. The insect injects the victim with a substance that keeps blood flowing. The female mosquito drinks the blood and uses it to produce eggs. One meal gives her enough blood to produce as many as two hundred fifty eggs. The mosquito lays them in any standing water. The eggs produce worm-like creatures in two days to a few months. However, some eggs can stay in water for years until conditions are right for development. The worm-like creatures feed on organisms in the water. After four to ten days, they change again into creatures called pupas. The pupas rise to the surface of the water. Adult mosquitoes pull themselves out of the pupas and fly away. The World Health Organization says mosquitoes cause disease and death for millions of people throughout the world. That is because mosquitoes can carry organisms that cause disease, such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, lymphatic filariasis and encephalitis. However, the disease does not affect mosquitoes. Experts say the best way to prevent the disease carried by mosquitoes is not to be bitten by one. There are several ways to prevent mosquito bites, for example, do not keep standing water anywhere near your home. 49. According to the text, which of the following is TRUE? A. Both male and female mosquitoes drink blood. B. Only female mosquitoes drink people’s blood. C. Female mosquitoes drink plant’s fluids. D. In the cold, dark waters of the Antarctic hides a creature with eight arms, two super long tentacles(触须)and eyes as big as dinner plates. Sound like something out of a science fiction movie? Think again. On February 21, New Zealand fishermen landed a colossal squid the length of a school bus. They had been fishing with long lines for Chilean sea bass in the waters off the coast of New Zealand when they caught the rare squid. With two hours of hard work, the crew skillfully pulled the creature into a net and dragged in aboard their ship. Scientists evaluate that the animal weighs about a half ton and is about 40 feet long. That would make this colossal squid the biggest on record. First identified in 1925 after two tentacles were found in a whale’s stomach, the colossal squid has long been a mystery. The animals are not easy to observe because they can go down to ocean depths of 6,500 feet. What scientists do know from studying the bodies of a half dozen colossal squids is that they are fierce hunters. The recently captured colossal squid has been frozen to keep it for scientific study. It will be transported to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, in the capital city of Wellington. Experts believe it to be the first adult male ever caught undamaged. Scientists hope to learn more about the colossal squid’s diet, behavior and reproductive (繁殖) patterns. “Scientists will be very interested in this amazing creature,” said New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderson. “It adds immeasurably to our understanding of the marine environment.” 57. It is usually difficult for experts to observe the squid because ______. A. it moves too fast B. it is too large. C. it is dangerous. D. it can go down to deep ocean. 58. From the passage, we can infer that _____. A. the fishermen often meet colossal squids B. scientists know much about the colossal squid C. the squid is actually from a science fiction story D. the fishermen had some difficulty catching the large squid 59. The purpose of keeping such a huge squid is to ______. A. make it into food B. set a world record C. do research on it D. display it for visitors 60. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The biggest squid ever found B. Scientific research on squid C. The lifestyle of the colossal squid D. How the fishermen caught the squid 41-44 ABBD 45-48 DCDB 49-52 BBBC 53-56 CCBA 57-60 DDCA
