Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. A When we see other people being given presents, we tend to want one ourselves. Birthdays allow people in most cultures a chance to receive gifts on their own special day once a year. At Christmas, on the other hand, some people who are not given presents may feel left out. It is a tricky issue for religious minorities in most Christian countries. The Netherlands (Holland) provides an interesting example of how people can respond to others' luck. In a weekly lottery, about a third of the Dutch population waits for the one-in-430,000 draw of a winning postcode. All ticket-owners in the lucky area get a cash payment of about 10,000 ($13,000) and one of them receives a car as well. It is like a local Christmas: everyone in the postcode knows that some neighbors have won. A recent study found that the neighbors of winners are more likely to buy a new car within the next six months and might decorate the outside of their house, even though they did not buy a ticket. Few children get Christmas presents which are worth 10,000 in value. Nevertheless, for a kid, Christmas is equal in value to a Wall Street trader's bonus. The competitive attitude can be almost as strong and obvious. American Jews are a case in point. The festival of lights, Hanukkah, is a relatively minor Jewish holiday, celebrated not long before Christmas. It is sometimes called “Jewish Christmas”, and the holiday season in families with a mixed religious background has been named “Chrismukkah”. Ran Abramitzky, Liran Einav and Oren Righi of Stanford University studied the behavior of Jewish parents in America and found that families with children under 18 celebrate Hanukkah more seriously. The fewer Jews there are in a given county, the more they spend on holiday-related products. Austrians and Germans with a Turkish background are another example. There is no Muslim holiday close to Christmas. The competitive pressure has instead led some to behave like atheists (people who believe God doesn't exist): they simply celebrate Christmas without its religious meaning. According to EthnOpinion, a Vienna-based market-research institute, almost one in seven Austrians with a Turkish background observes the holiday. “The overall approach is very practical,” says a German-Turkish author and psychologist, Deniz Baspinar. “Even the Christmas tree in Turkish homes is no longer the ironic statement it once was.” 36.It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A.there are a total of 430,000 postcodes in Holland B.the Dutch postcode lottery is held every other week C.about 1/2 of the Dutch buy postcode lottery tickets D.the biggest lottery winner gets a car instead of cash 37.The author takes the Dutch postcode lottery as an example to ________. A.illustrate what competitive pressure is B.appeal to readers to join postcode lottery C.show the right way to respond to others' luck D.tell readers every day in Holland is Christmas 38.What can we know about American Jews? A.They call Christmas Hanukkah. B.They celebrate the festival of lights. C.They have mixed religious backgrounds. D.They spend little on products on holidays. 39.Some Austrians with a Turkish background celebrate Christmas because ________. A.they want to make Christmas Turkish B.they want to mix with the local people C.they feel left out since they are not religious D.they feel bad when others are all celebrating 40.How does the author develop the passage? A.By giving examples. B.By quoting wise words. C.By making comparisons. D.By making assumptions. B I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for close to four hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, “NEED A JACK(千斤顶).” Right as I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He sized up the situation and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands in. I tried to put $20 in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl, their daughter, where they lived, thinking maybe I'd send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches, and then go back home. After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I'd had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a tamale(玉米粽子). I thanked them again and walked back to my car. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $20 bill! I ran to the van and the guy rolled down his window. He saw the $20 in my hand, started shaking his head smiling, and with what looked like great concentration said in English: “Today you, tomorrow me.” Then he rolled up his window and drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back. This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly. Since then I've helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn't accept money. But every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank. 41.From the passage we know that ________. A.the Mexican man couldn't speak English B.the author's car broke down on the road C.the Mexican family came to Oregon for a visit D.$20 was a small amount for the Mexican family 42.Why did the author give the money quietly to the man's wife? A.Because the man had refused to accept it. B.Because the man's wife needn't wash her hands. C.Because the author thought the Mexican family was poor. D.Because the author thought the man's wife would take it. 43.The Mexican man helped the author because he tended to think that ________. A.it was completely wrong for others to pass by quietly B.it was quite easy to help the author mend the Jeep C.it was possible that everyone might get into trouble D.the author was a polite stranger and deserved the help 44.Which of the following is TRUE about the author? A.He hated those who didn't offer help. B.He would send a present to the family soon. C.He wondered why they didn't take the money. D.He considered helping others as saving money in the bank. 45.What can we infer from the passage? A.The Mexican family lived a richer life than the author. B.The Mexican family did seasonal work in Oregon each year. C.The author was inspired to help others by the Mexican family. D.What made the writer moved was the tamale given by the girl. C Running like the wind, roaring like thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in South China. This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund. The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to southern China. In the 1950's, there were over 4,000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural habitat and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most endangered species. Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they could not look after themselves. “Breeding has damaged the quality of the species,” said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo. To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa. Four of them have already arrived. Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts(本能)and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base. “South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in,” said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Center. “We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco-chain(生物链) and there was a lack of space.”The tigers should return to China when the reservations in Fujian are ready. 46.What is the main reason for the South China tiger becoming one of the world's top ten most endangered species? A.Because it has lost its natural instincts. B.Because there is not a complete eco-chain. C.Because there is no space for it. D.Because uncontrolled hunting has destroyed its natural living conditions. 47.How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on? A.Its effect still remains to be seen. B.Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins. C.Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills. D.The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely. 48.By saying “But they are nothing like their wild cousins”, the writer means that ________. A.they are no longer feared by other wild animals B.they don't know how to hunt or kill C.a complete change has resulted in the species because of breeding D.to reintroduce them into the wild has become an urgent task 49.What is the purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa? A.To help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild. B.To provide them with a better environment. C.To get the tigers to go on a tour. D.To find a complete eco-chain for them. 50.Which one is not the reason for South Africa being chosen as the training place? A.Because the tigers can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base. B.Because South Africans are skilled at dealing with the tigers. C.Because there is a complete eco-chain and enough space there. D.Because the country has good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in. Part Ⅲ Writing (45 marks) Section A (10 marks) Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do.Birthdays celebrate the day when we were born.Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity—or so we hope.We all like to imagine that we are getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the wonder of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That is a different story. Growing old is not exactly for people in youth-oriented(以年轻人为中心)American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You're young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old.People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”. Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden.Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by.Retirement at the age of 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income.Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference.Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care, and housing. Some even experience age discrimination.American sociologist(社会学家) Pat Moore once dressed up like an older person and wandered around city streets. She was often treated rudely—even cheated and robbed. However, when dressed as a young person, she received much more respect. Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer.Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the group of the elderly.America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹)are “in”.Marketing experts are ready noticing this growing group of consumers. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. How we look and how we appear to others probably worry us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life.Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion. Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment. Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress.A barber today does not cut a boy's hair in the same way as he used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did.The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull. What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion.Take hats for example—In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men followed his example. There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World War Ⅱ, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter and the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again. Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be.It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else.Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of the top fashion houses. 61.What do the fashion magazines or TV advertisements claim to bring us? (No more than 2 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 62.Why does the writer take President Kennedy as an example? (No more than 14 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 63.What does the writer try to explain by talking about short skirts? (No more than 8 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 64.Why are jeans so popular according to the writer? I didn't accept money. But every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank. 题干关键词为:the world's top ten most endangered species。第三段中的“But due to the destruction of their natural habitat and uncontrolled hunting”告诉我们华南虎成为十大濒临灭绝物种之一的原因。由此可知答案。 47.C 细节理解题。倒数第二段中的Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.告诉我们,在有关人员的努力下,一些喂养的老虎正在恢复它们的本能。 48.B 句意推测题。下一句话对此做了进一步的解释:They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. 也就是B项所说的they don't know how to hunt or kill。 49.A 细节理解题。由倒数第二段的To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa. A。 Part Ⅲ Section A 51.Growing Old 52.Positive attitudes 53.About the young 54.developing and learning 55.experience and wisdom 56.problem 57.decreasing sharply 58.poor nutrition 59.Social 60.social security Section B 61.Confidence. 根据第二段的If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment. 62.To show the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. 答案在第四段第二句。 63.There is a cyclical pattern in fashion. 答案在第五段第一句。 64.Because it's a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion. 答案在最后一段最后一句。 Section C One possible version: Dear_editor, I'm_proud_of what China has achieved at the London Olympic Games. Chinese athletes won many medals at the sports event. Obviously, China is a leading country in sports in the world. But on the other hand, we still have many problems. The number of overweight and short-sighted teenagers is increasingly growing. Teenagers seem to have more health problems than their older generation. In many cities, people have no easy access to sports facilities. So I think it's the government's responsibility to provide more and better sports services for its people and to encourage more and more people to take various forms of exercise to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
