Turn on the TV or check the news online and it seems to be one__16__after another. So when we do get a glimpse of__17__news, it attracts our eyes right now. Like just recently, there was a science article online about__18__and how they prepare delicious meals. I went right for it. I was really curious about what was happening there in the ocean. It was a short break from the__19__news which we really don't want to know about. In an attempt to write more positive articles, the media sometimes give us a glimpse of what I call, almost news. Like a recent article about finding a woman they think might be 128 years old. That's kind of__20__. But they didn't wait to find out if it was real news first. Instead, they just printed that__21__news story. It's still a nice break. And if the woman actually is 128 years old, I'd like to see a follow-up article on how she did it. Wouldn't it be great if she grew so old from eating ice cream, potato chips and dip? While it's true that sensationalism (追求轰动效应) __22__stories, we need frequent breaks from all that negative reality. There's another form of reporting that's extremely useful and it's neither positive nor negative. It's warning news. A possible problem is__23__, such as a volcano in Alaska that's expected to erupt. Scientists at the volcano center in Alaska had been monitoring a series of__24__under the volcano. The residents, being warned as a good news report will do, were buying up breathing masks and air filters for their homes. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. A Study after study shows that regular moderate walking can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of heart disease. In a study, Japanese researchers tested obese men before and after they joined a one-year modest walking plan. All they did was up the number of steps they took during their daily activities, such as walking from the car to the grocery store. The result: Their blood pressure and cholesterol levels improved and the amount of body fat around their abdomen(腹部)—the dangerous kind of fat that leads to higher rates of heart disease—greatly decreased. That's good news, because walking has now become the most popular fitness activity in the United States. Convenient, simple, and gentle on the joints, walking is perhaps the easiest form of exercise to maintain. According to surveys, four out of five women who start a walking program continue to walk, while half of women who attempt other types of aerobic exercise, such as swimming, drop_out during the first few months. Here are some ways to put more walking into your life. 1.Learn the basics. Before you take your next step outdoors, you need to know how much walking to do, and how often. 2.Pick a charity—it could be breast cancer, the American Red Cross, the United Way—and pledge to contribute $1 for every mile you walk. You'll take pride in the fact that you are walking for something beyond yourself. 3.Walk with a friend. If she's expecting you, you're more likely to get out of bed on cold winter mornings or skip the cafeteria for a lunchtime walk. 4.Walk for entertainment one day a week. Instead of walking around your neighborhood, walk through the zoo, an art museum, or a shopping mall. 36.Which of the following is NOT the character of walking? A.Convenient. B.Difficult. C.Gentle. C The supposed “consensus” on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years. The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age as serious as the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th century. Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the date was issued last week by the Met Office (气象部). It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997. Meanwhile, leading climate scientists yesterday told The Mail on Sunday that, after giving off unusually high levels of energy throughout the 20th century, the sun is now heading towards a “grand minimum” in its output, threatening cold summers, bitter winters and a shortening of the season available for growing food. Solar output goes through 11-year cycles, with high numbers of sunspots (黑子) seen at their peak. We are now at what should be the peak of what scientists call “Cycle 24”—which is why last week's solar storm resulted in sightings of the Aurora Borealis (北极光) further south than usual. But sunspot numbers are running at less than half those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th century. Analysis by experts at NASA and the University of Arizona—obtained from magnetic-field measurements 120,000 miles beneath the sun's surface—suggests that “Cycle 25”, whose peak is due in 2022, will be a great deal weaker still. According to a paper issued last week by the Met Office, there is a 92 percent chance that both “Cycle 25” and those taking place in the following decades will be as weak as, or weaker than, the “Dalton minimum” of 1790 to 1830. In this period, named after the meteorologist (气象学者) Joh Dalton, average temperatures in parts of Europe fell by 2℃. However, it is also possible that the new solar energy decline could be as deep as the “Maunder minimum” (named after astronomer Edward Maunder), between 1645 and 1715 in the coldest part of the “Little Ice Age” when, as well as the Thames frost fairs, the canals of Holland froze solid. 46.The new temperature data was produced from ________. A.the Met Office B.readings from measuring stations C.the analysis by experts at NASA and the University of Arizona D.the records about “Dalton minimum” and “Maunder minimum” 47.In the future, the energy the sun gives off will ________. A.go back to normal B.drop seriously C.continue to rise D.keep steady 48.What may result from the change of solar output? a.Summer becomes even hotter. b.Winter becomes even colder. c.People lack food to eat. d.Average temperature decreases. A.a, b, c B.a, b, d C.b, c, d D.a, c, d 49.Which year might have the highest average temperature according to the passage? A.The year 1698. B.The year 1813. C.The year 1997. D.The year 2022. 50.The author writes the passage to ________. A.appeal to people to study meteorology B.introduce a study on global temperature C.call for further confirmation of the study D.tell people to produce more carbon dioxide Part Ⅲ Writing (45 marks) Section A (10 marks) Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. The atmosphere is a gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth. It is a collection of gases, vapour and particulates surrounding the Earth. The atmosphere is very important to life on this planet because, firstly, it acts as a system for cycling and recycling carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen; living things transform these elements into sources of carbohydrates and proteins for nourishment(营养品). Secondly, it protects us from invisible threats such as the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Thirdly, it protects the Earth's surface from rapid heating during the day and rapid cooling down at night. Lastly, it provides us with the air we breathe as it is our basic life support system; every breath we take requires oxygen in the air. However, human activities are causing the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere. This has resulted in many environmental and health problems. Urban air pollution, acid rain, contamination by toxic chemicals, the lessening of the stratospheric ozone layer and changes in the global climatic system are all important environmental threats to the atmosphere. Air pollution Our planet is becoming choked with poisonous gases mostly from our daily activities like driving cars, warming our houses and running power stations. And pollution doesn't need a passport to travel around the world. Ozone depletion For years, chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) were used as a cooling device in freezers and air conditioners. CFCs destroy the ozone layer, the layer that filters(过滤) ultraviolet radiation from the sun which causes eye damage and skin cancer. The greenhouse effect As more greenhouse gases released in the atmosphere reflect more heat back to the Earth , it causes a rise in temperature, beyond that which is considered to be normal. Rising temperature will cause the climate change, which may lead to more natural disasters, and extinction(灭绝) of some animals and plants. Additionally, while passing through surface, some is lost in space. Greenhouse gases reflect back some solar energy and make the atmosphere hotter. Humans are damaging the atmosphere, which serves to be our coat. One day it deserves their right. And the world is warming up, causing the polar icecaps to melt, sea levels to rise and extreme weather conditions to occur more frequently. Section C One possible version: Dear_Mr_Jackson, I_am_really_sorry_about_my_using_the_mobile_phone_in_your_lecture_last_week. Please accept my heart-felt apology for being so rude a student. I know any word might sound a made-up excuse. But I did not use the mobile phone for no reason. I was trying to find a part-time job last week and that day, I got a job offer and they needed my further information immediately. Therefore,I had no other choice but to try sending them a text message in class and that was exactly what I was doing when you discovered. Anyway, using a mobile phone in the classroom is not acceptable to any teacher. I swear it will not happen again. But I do need my phone back to keep in touch with others. Will you be so kind to give it back to me? Thanks a million! Best wishes! Yours_sincerely, Li_Hua 版权所有:高考资源网(www.ks5u.com)
