Last week I received a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her son from committing suicide. In closing she called me a hero. That got me thinking about what a hero is. Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car? If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someone’s life? Today I looked up the word “hero” in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read “a person who does something brave” and also “a person who is good and noble”. That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very important. And I remembered what happened to me years ago. After my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition. I was within hours trying to get up enough courage to end the pain and misery. When I returned home, someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero. The many stories I kept writing in the following years saved the life of a teenage boy. In turn that makes the person who sent me the card a double hero. I suppose that is why I fight so hard to help the children now living in orphanages (孤儿院). Most children come out of these institutions with a very hard and bitter attitude against the world. The gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. Hopefully, most of them will never hurt anyone because of the kindness shown to them by those of us who cared. If it works, we will also become "heroes". 56. The main idea of the passage is _______________. A. why the writer should be a hero B. what a hero exactly is C. whether the writer is a hero D. that everyone is a hero 57. Why did the woman call the writer a hero at the end of the call? A. Because his story saved her son’s life. B. Because he saved a family from a burning car. C. Because he asked her son not to kill himself. D. Because he was cute and kind to everybody. 58. What does the underlined word “it” in the last sentence of Paragraph 5 refer to? A. The wonderful card the writer received. B. The action of sending the card. C. The fact that the sender helped the writer. D. The fact that the sender was a friend of the writer. 59. According to the writer, who can be considered as a hero? A. A person who is brave. B. A person who writes wonderful stories. C. A person who can hold a door for others. D. A person who helps someone in trouble. B Do you like to eat many different foods at the same time? Most of us do, but to buy twenty dishes at a restaurant is just too expensive for most Americans. A good way is to eat a potluck meal. The idea is to have many families in a community prepare one or two dishes only and bring them to a large room. Many soups, salads, meats, hot dishes, cold dishes, desserts, and drinks are put on the table at one time. Each family member then takes a paper plate, a plastic knife, a fork, a spoon and a paper cup. In turn, they pick out the food they want to eat and fill their own plates with a balanced meal. Then, they sit with either their family or friends. When they finish, they may go back to the table and eat more food for there is always more than the group can eat at one time. Following the meal, every one puts their paper plates and cups as well as the plastic knives, forks, and spoons into the rubbish container. At many potlucks, the people then begin having fun. A group of four men may sing as a Barbershop Quartet. A pianist or a violinist may play a solo. Often, there is group singing. Sometimes there is a liar’s contest. Three people are chosen to tell a story. They leave the room and two come back and tell a true story while one tells a lie. The lie must be a clever story so it will be hard to choose which of the three stories is not true. The liar’s contest always causes everyone to laugh loudly. Everyone leaves the potluck in good spirits as they have all eaten a very good meal and they have enjoyed themselves very much. 60. What does the phrase “potluck meal” probably mean? A. A meal contained in a pot that will bring you good luck. B. A meal where many families eat together each preparing one or two dishes. C. A big meal for some special guests. D. An ordinary meal for several families. 61. How do people at a potluck meal enjoy themselves? A. A group of three men may sing as a Barbershop Quartet. B. Three people are often chosen to have a liar’s contest. C. Three people are chosen to tell a true story. D. A pianist or a violinist may play as a Barbershop Quartet. 62. In the “liar’s contest” it is hard for people to choose the lie because . A. the lie is also a true story B. the true stories are easy to tell C. the lie is told by a clever liar D. the lie is required to be a clever story 63. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To show a very effective way to eat well. B. To speak highly of American social activities. C. To introduce one of the American community activities. D. To show the importance of a potluck meal. C Japan’s nuclear crisis is also causing concerns in China. Worried shoppers rushed to stores and supermarkets in the country for salt, with the belief that it might protect them from potential nuclear radiation spreading from Japan. Many rushed to stores to buy as much iodized(含碘的) salt as possible because of the rumor that iodized salt could help prevent radiation poisoning spreading from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Consumers also worried that the nuclear plumes might spread to China by air and sea, polluting food sources, including salt taken from the sea. The wave of panic buying spread quickly across the country, driving up salt prices by five to ten fold in some cities. Even regions rich in salt production, like Jiangxi Province, faced sudden shortages. The government took measures to guarantee enough supply and to stabilize(稳定)the market. It also dismissed the nuclear rumors, saying the nuclear fallout was unlikely to reach the country, and that salt did not help to prevent radiation poisoning. Local authorities have stepped in to stabilize the market, too. As well, state-owned salt companies have been urged to increase their supply. Facing expanding market demand, distribution centers have taken extra measures to ensure they are well-prepared. Wang Yun, the General Manager of Beijing Salt Industry Corporation, said, “Our storage reserves can guarantee a two-month supply for the Beijing market.” 64. People made panic purchases of salt for the reasons EXCEPT______________. A. salt might protect them from potential nuclear radiation B. nuclear radiation might pollute food sources C. nuclear radiation might pollute salt taken from the sea D. there would be a shortage of salt on the market 65. The underlined word “fold” in the third paragraph means _______. A. times B. prices C. quantities D. means 66. What measures did the government take for the panic buying? A. Enough salt would be offered to each house. B. It admitted that salt could stop nuclear radiation. C. Authorities urged state-owned salt companies to increase the supply. D. Those who spread the rumor were all arrested and punished. 67. What is the purpose of the writer to give the example of Beijing Salt Industry Corporation? A. To tell readers that there is a salt company in Beijing. B. To make people believe that the supply of salt is enough. C. To call on panic people to buy enough salt. D. To prove what the government did was right. D Why can some people sleep through noises like a honking car or flushing toilet, while others are awakened by the lightest sound? To find the answer, sleep researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital conducted an unusual study of 12 self-described deep sleepers. After tests confirmed that the healthy volunteers were solid sleepers, they took part in a three-night study in the university’s sleep laboratory. The participants spent the night in a big and comfortable room. But the room also included four speakers positioned near the top of the bed. During the night, the deep sleepers were subjected to 14 different recorded sounds, like street traffic, toilets flushing, and an airplane flying overhead. Next door, the researchers monitored their sleep patterns and brain waves. As expected, all of the participants slept relatively well, but there were differences in how they responded to the noisy interruptions. Some of the sleepers didn’t wake up even when a sound was blasted at 70 decibels (分贝); others were awakened by sounds at 40 or 50 decibels. The researchers discovered that the difference in a sleeper’s reaction to noise could be predicted by the level of brain activity called “sleep spindles (纺锤体)”. A sleep spindle is a burst of high-frequency brain activity coming from deep inside the brain during sleep. The source of the spindles is the thalamus (丘脑), a part of the brain that sends sensory information to the rest of the cortex (皮层). Before the study, the Massachusetts researchers theorized that the spindles are the brain’s way of preventing sensory information from passing through the thalamus and waking the rest of the brain during sleep. They found that sleepers who experienced the most sleep spindles during the night were also the soundest sleepers and were least likely to be awakened by noise. Scientists already know that most people become lighter sleepers with age, most likely because older people experience less “slow wave sleep”, which is the deepest stage of sleep. People also produce fewer sleep spindles as they age. But even when controlling for the stage of sleep a person was in, the number of sleep spindles still predicted their risk for awakening because of noise. More research is needed, but the findings suggest that a better understanding of sleep spindles could lead to new behavioral or drug therapies for people with sleep disorders. For example, future studies may try to determine whether diet, exercise or other behaviors may influence the number of sleep spindles a person produces during the night. 68. Some participants can sleep well through loud noises mainly because ________. A. their brains don’t respond to outside noises. B. they don’t pay attention to the monitors. C. they adapt to the environment quickly. D. their brains react differently to noises. 69. Scientists believe that the key to affecting deep sleep is________. A. sleep disorders B. stages of sleep C. sleep spindles D. sensory information 70. From the passage we can predict________. A. sleep spindles will be applied to change one’s behaviors. B. more solid sleepers will take part in relative experiments. C. more factors in influencing sleep spindles may be discovered. D. deep sleepers will probably enjoy a more healthy life. 第二小节 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分) Being shy Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence. Have faith in your abilities. Without a reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful. You can build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and psychologists: Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. 71 Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. Select your language carefully, and then say it. Prepare yourself for being with others in groups. 72 Develop them so that people will want to make friends with you. Your friends will stand by you. So don’t turn down party invitations just because of your shyness. If you start feeling self-conscious(不自然的) in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people. 73 Other people are concerned about the impression they are making, too. No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. 74 They work at fighting their shy feelings so they can face the cameras and the public. 75 Nevertheless, perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know more about you. A. Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards. B. Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy. C. Remember, there is always someone on your side. D. Make a list of the good qualities you have. E. Think about what you would like to say in advance. F. Remember, you are not alone. G. Recently our school has launched a program aimed at making our campus a safe place to study in. The program will make us aware that safety should always come first in our daily life, whether we stay at school or we walk in the street. When we are playing sports, we should be careful and try to avoid being injured. Furthermore, in case there is a conflict, we should remain calm and avoid quarrelling or fighting, which may only bring sufferings and pain to us mentally and physically. As far as I’m concerned, it is everyone’s duty to keep our school safe. Let’s take action now. That’s all. Thank you.
