A Packing up for an adventure Do you know what is hot in summer? You might instantly reply — the weather. But actually there is an activity that is much hotter than the weather. From June, many have packed up their belongings on their backs and started off on a journey. If you're interested in joining in, read the following list and get ready to go: 1.Shoes and socks You may think shoes and socks are the very common things, but they play important roles for backpackers. A pair of good shoes or socks can determine how far you can go. Usually, a pair of good hiking shoes will cost you 1,000 yuan. You should choose one that uses waterproof (防水的) materials. For the socks, a brand called Coolmax keeps your feet dry as it wicks away (带走) moisture. 2.Bags Backpacks will carry all your necessities so it's important to choose a good one that's right for your needs. If you want to choose a climbing bag, one with a capacity of 55L is appropriate as the bigger ones are not convenient for outdoor activities. If you go hiking, choose one that is long and not too wide. If you plan to climb on snow-capped mountains, colorful bags would be a wise choice. 3.Walking stick Some people may dismiss walking sticks as only for the weak, but they can come in handy. They're ideal in some hard environments, as walking sticks can help you save your strength, keep your balance and prevent injuries. Some experienced backpackers even bring two sticks and they enjoy the feeling of walking with four legs. Recommended brands include Leki, Master, and Black Diamond. 4.Tent For backpackers, sleeping outside is very common. So you should choose equipment that can offer you a relatively comfortable sleeping environment. The tent should be waterproof. Recommended brands include Eurohike, Luxe and Acme. If you can afford more expensive tents, you can get top-grade brands such as Mountain Hardwear, The North Face, Ferrino and Marmot Progaint. 5.Clothes Experienced backpackers have the three-layer rule when it comes to clothing. The three layers refer to the outer layer, warm layer and underwear. First, your outer layer should be waterproof with good air permeability. Second, the warm layer should be portable. And third, the underwear should be 100 percent cotton and have Coolmax to wick away moisture. 6.________ People should bring medicine along with them on these kinds of trips. And some necessary first aid things are Band-Aids, gauze, medicine to ease swelling and pills for stomachaches and colds. All skirts will be banned from September at Paget High School in Branston, Burtonupon-Trent. Tight-fitting trousers will also be forbidden. Head teacher Don Smith said, “One of the big issues for us at the school has been the number of girls who have been wearing inappropriately short skirts. This has been an area of particular concern at a time when there has been a lot of material nationally about the sexualisation (性感化) of young people.” Mr. Smith said it would be impractical to police (监督) the length of girls' skirts and said a complete ban would be easier for staff to put in force. He said, “We did not want to arrive at a situation where we were telling girls their skirts could only be a certain number of centimeters above or below the knee.” The head teacher said pupils', parents' and other teachers' opinions were sought before the uniform rules were changed. The new clothing policy has been explained in a letter sent to parents of the school's 1,000 pupils and will come into force after the summer holiday. The school also wants pupils to wear clip-on (夹式的) ties instead of traditional neckwear. This rule will be applied over the next year and support will be given to parents unable to afford the new tie. One parent, whose teenage daughter attends the school, said: “I completely agree some girls were wearing skirts that were too short. However, I think girls should be allowed to be womanly. Other schools manage to let girls wear skirts while making sure they are not improperly dressed. I don't see why Paget can't do the same.” 6.From September, schoolgirls at Paget High School can wear ________. A.all skirts B.loose trousers C.tight-fitting trousers D.below-the-knee skirts 解析:选B。 7.According to Don Smith, ________. A.some publishers are to blame for the youth's sexualisation B.the school should set a rule about the length of skirts C.skirts above the knee should be allowed in school D.it will be difficult to put the new ban in force 解析:选A。 8.We can learn from the text that ________. A.there are 1,000 girls at Paget High School B.the new clothing policy has met no objection C.Paget High School took parents' opinions into account D.Paget High School will provide its pupils with free clip-on ties 解析:选C。 由第四段中的“The head teacher said pupils', parents' and other teachers' opinions were sought ...” 9.From the last paragraph, what's the parent's attitude towards Paget's new rule? A.Unconcerned. B.Appreciative. C.Curious. D.Opposed. 10.What would be the best title for the text?
