Between 1915 and 1920,Mallory found himself tired of his ordinary life, though he had been the father of three children by then. His restlessness mirrored the era of mad exploration in which he lived,an era in which Mount Everest was indeed“the last frontier”.Because of his reputation for climbing,he was asked to participate in the first Everest expedition in 1921,which allowed him to make a living by doing what he loved best. That first Everest expedition reached 7,010 meters;a following one in 1922 reached 8,301 meters but was ruined by the tragic deaths of seven staff workers in an avalanche(雪崩),an accident for which Mallory felt partially responsible.Frustrated,Mallory did not intend to return to Everest, but a trip to New York City to lecture about his Everest experiences restored his enthusiasm. The New York trip was also where the often-asked question“Why climb Everest?”caused Mallory’s now-legendary answer—“Because it’s there”. In 1924,the third Everest expedition broke the previous climbing record, reaching 8,534 meters.Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine made an attempt at the summit but disappeared in heavy weather and never returned. It seemed certain that they had perished on the mountain, but whether they reached the summit before they died is unknown. 75 years later,in 1999,Mallory’s body was found by Conrad Anker,an American rock climber.Clues found on his body gave searchers some understanding of what might have happened, but the puzzling mystery of“Did he make it?”remains. Now,a movie named The Wildest Dream:Conquest of Everest attempts both to solve the mystery and to give us a deeper appreciation of Mallory. 1.Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that Mallory ______. The study’s principal author Derek Houston said the study found that deaf children’s word-learning skills were strongly affected by their early auditory experience. The increased benefit of early auditory input suggests that operations should be done at younger ages.Currently, the Food and Drug Administration guidelines approve cochlear implantation at one year of age, although many children are implanted as young as 6 months of age. Dr Houston said the research showed that deaf children’s word-learning skill was strongly affected by their early auditory experience, whether that experience was through normal means or with a cochlear implant. He said children who received the implant by the age of 13 months performed similarly to their normal-hearing peers while children who received a cochlear implant later performed,on average, more poorly than their normal-hearing peers. “Taken together, the findings suggest that early access to auditory input, even if the access to sound is quite poor, plays an important role in acquiring the ability to rapidly learn associations between spoken words and their meanings,”summarized Dr Houston. The team used the Intermodal Preferential Looking(IPL)paradigm(范例)to investigate the language ability of the children. The IPL paradigm requires the child to listen to a repetitive noun while looking at an object. The child continues to look at the screen that displays the original object and a second object while the speaker repeats the word associated with the object.A hidden camera records the movement of the child’s eyes to see if he identifies the correct picture with the object’s correct name. 5.What do we know about the projects undertaken by the researchers in Paragraph 1? A.The researchers studied more than 50 children totally. B.The projects only included deaf children who had received cochlear implantation. C.The children in the projects were of the same age. D.The projects showed that early auditory input is quite important. 根据第一段...the importance of early auditory input...和...have contributed to that evidence with several projects可知,答案为D项。 答案:D 6.To develop deaf children’s language skills,Dr Houston stressed the importance of ______. A.the experience of early auditory input B.the means of early auditory input C.the total time of early auditory input D.the quality of early auditory input 7.What can we conclude from Dr Houston’s words? A.Cochlear implantation should be performed as early as possible. B.Cochlear implantation is useless for children who become deaf after being born. C.Deaf children should receive cochlear implantation no later than 13 months old. D.Deaf children who receive cochlear implantation perform better than normal children. Children who received the implant by the age of 13 months performed similarly to their normal-hearing... C 8.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A.The advantages of the IPL paradigm. B.The necessity of cochlear implantation. C.The process of investigating children’s language ability. D.The process of developing children’s language ability.
